Futurex Provides UIDAI and Aadhaar Identity Security for India
Earlier this year, two organizations under the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology—the UIDAI and the CCA—released information regarding the use of HSMs in protecting personally identifying information (PII).
Futurex’s India-based office has been instrumental in helping customers meet these requirements by not only ensuring our HSMs meet the technological needs of these mandates, but also offering customers scalable, business-specific options and solutions to enable them to quickly and efficiently transition to a more secure, cryptographic-based process.
The most widespread and time-sensitive of the two changes were issues by the UIDAI (the government agency in charge of providing and monitoring Aadhaar number issuance) in June of 2017. This mandate required all Authentication/e-KYC User Agencies (AUA/KUA) to use HSMs during authentication processes. Previously, authentications were software-based processes, which left keys and private information unencrypted and available for interception while in-transit.
By using Futurex HSMs in-house, or—for those concerned about in-house audit compliancy for secure environments—our Securus coupled with a network-attached Futurex HSM for remote infrastructure management, our customers have been able to find a scalable HSM-based authentication and signing process that meets the needs of their current infrastructure and business model.
These changes are a part of India’s marked determination and progression towards a secure and sustainable e-Governance system, promoting digital services and technological innovation. Futurex is proud to be able to help create a more secure environment and help Indian businesses make such a large advancement in cyber security.
Ganesh Karri, Chief Solutions Architect for South Asia, says "We admire the work that the UIDAI and the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology have been doing these past few years to increase consumer safety. As they continue to work toward a more centralized and secure e-Governance system, and continue to prioritize the protection of Indian citizens' identities and information, our mission will be to continue to ensure that we provide our customers with products that allow such vital and sensitive information to be protected.”
